People/Product Photography and HDR

Winter Personal Work - HDR - Dirk Ruge, Model/Adventurer
Not to long ago I wrote about HDR and the benefits I thought it would provide in my landscape and architecture photography. What I did not write about are some of the other possibilities that I am exploring with HDR. If you’ve done any advertising photography you know that the images have to be awesome and alive…they must reach out from the printed page or the web and grab a viewers attention. That was pretty easy to do 10 years ago maybe even 5 years ago but in today’s media savvy world it’s getting more challenging to attract attention.
One tool that I’ve recently explored is using HDR with products and people. As seen in the image above…we are combining products and people coming up with some pretty interesting detailed images. In this particular image I would have never got the snow detail if I were exposing for the model and the talent. But when you are able to shoot a range of exposures and put them all together…the magic happens. You actually get closer to seeing what the human eye can see and that might be just enough to stop that page-turner and get that product highlighted which in turn makes for a happy client.
Take it easy on me…this image is only for demonstration purposes. I realize it needs a bit more work before it could be sent out to a client, but I think you can definitely see the possibilities. Your thoughts…

Nice work, I like the fact that you did not over cook the HDR process, that so many like to do, they look too fake
Your shot here is good, the red water container pops as does the SPOT locator.
Whiter snow (snow looks a little grey-on my calibrated monitor) and maybe a blue sky would be nice.

Thanks Chris…I really think there is a place for under cooked HDR’s.

Instead of combining exposures, you should try shooting a single raw image that’s properly exposed for the midtones, then using Photomatix Pro use the exposure blending tool by doing multiple brackets of the original raw file.

Hey Michael! Very nice photo, and great job with the processing. Is this 1 image HDR, creating multiple exposures in Lightroom to create 3 images then generate them together? (all from a single image?)

This is a 3 image HDR. I’ve only messed with HDR a couple of times…I’m a newbie. I shoot all three images and then import into Photomatix. Not sure if it is the best but I’m just experimenting with the possibilities. Thanks for taking a look.
Best,
Michael

I’ll give it a try Alex. Is this how you process your HDR’s? I’ve only messed with HDR a few times but I do like the possibilities. Thanks for taking a look! Cheers, Michael
